A fine example of a prismatic compass and Watkin's clinometer combination, made by James Joseph Hicks in the second half of the 19th century, and housed separately in a fitted leather case.

The prismatic compass has 'J.HICKS, 8 HATTON GARDEN, LONDON' printed on the green card dial, and the clinometer has a brass bar reading 'WATKINS CLINOMETER PATENT 217. J.HICKS. MAKER, 8 HATTON GARDEN LONDON'.

Weighing just over 450 grams in the case, both compass and clinometer are in good condition and fully functional, although there is some light tarnishing on the internal clinometer mirror, but the numbers viewed are still legible.

Some handwritten words on the leather case have been crossed out, presumably by previous owners.
