This small hunter cased pocket compass is marked 'REGD NO 416645' and dates to after the First World War.
The dial design is sometimes referred to as the R.G.S. (Royal Geographical Society) pattern, which was in use in the late 19th century, before the patent was applied for by Francis Barker in 1903.
On the inside base, it is engraved 'CUPREL. Reg. DENNISON WATCH CASE CO LTD', confirming the case was supplied by Dennison and is comprised of the copper/nickel alloy Cuprel, introduced in 1920.
In good working order, with a functioning transit lock and strong hinge, it weighs just 60 grams and measures 1¾" (45 mm) in diameter (excluding the stem), the outer case is in very good condition and comes with its original chamois pouch for protection.
