Founded by Charles Henry Chadburn in 1845, Chadburns Ltd was responsible for the making of barometers and maritime equipment, this pocket barometer is inscribed 'Chadburns Ltd, 47 Castle St, Liverpool' dating it to the last quarter of the 19th century.
A rare piece, this pocket barometer sits within an impressive Moroccan leather presentation case, with built in stand and large domed lens, though there is one scratch on the center (see photo) it magnifies the dial for easier viewing when on display.
The interior is lined with green velvet and silk, and measures 3⅝" (93 mm) tall by 3¼" (83 mm) wide and ⅞" (22 mm) deep, with the domed lens extending to 1¾" (45 mm) and is in good condition, snapping securely shut and releasing with its integrated push button catch.
The barometer itself is made of brass with a dark gunmetal finish and is in very good condition, with virtually no loss of plating, the barometric scale reads from 26 to 31 inches with an altimeter scale from zero to 5,000 feet and sits snugly within the case, holding firmly so it can be presented either open or closed in a standing position and weighs just under 300 grams in its case.
With so few examples made, sets of this kind are quite uncommon, making this a worthy addition to any collection.
