The Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd, incorporated on 15 September 1871, was formed by a group of Army and Navy officers to supply articles of domestic consumption and general use to its members at the lowest remunerative rates. This fine example of an Edwardian aneroid pocket barometer and altimeter was made by Short & Mason for retail by the Army & Navy Co-operative Society stores at the turn of the century.

Inscribed "Short & Mason London. Made for A. & N. C. S. Ltd. Westminster - COMPENSATED FOR TEMPERATURE No F.11731 - MADE IN GT Britain" on a very clean frosted dial, the barometric scale reads from 23 to 31 inches, with an altimeter scale from zero to 8,000 feet.

In good working order and having passed the bag test, it is in very good cosmetic condition throughout. The brass body retains much of its original gilding and is accompanied by its original Moroccan leather case which is also in good condition, lined with clean green velvet and silk. with a strong hinge and a catch in working order.

Measuring 2" (50 mm) in diameter by ⅝" (17 mm) in depth, it weighs just over 110 grams, including the case. The movement bears the S & M logo, indicating that it was made by Short & Mason (see photo).
