Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, this large pocket barometer is inscribed 'Compensated' and has a barometric scale ranging from 26 to 31 inches, in addition to an altimeter scale ranging from zero to 5,000 feet. All lettering is etched into an aluminium dial, housed beneath clean bevelled glass, and it includes a rotating bezel with a small trend marker pin for setting the last measurement.
Accompanied by a separate mahogany case in good condition, featuring a red velvet lined interior and a mahogany frame with no splits. The lid is secured by a strong hinge that holds open at any angle, the case measures 4⅛" x 4⅜" x 1⅜" (105 mm x 113 mm x 35 mm) and weighs just over 100 grams.
A substantial instrument, weighing just under 350 grams without its case, the barometer measures 3" (75 mm) in diameter, not including the stem, by 1"(25 mm) in depth. The brass frame is in good, dent free condition, although the underside brass has experienced some darkening of the brass (see photo). It is in good working order, passing the plastic bag test, with the needle rising and falling under pressure as it should.
Although unsigned, this is quite a rare instrument of quality that is still practical for use today and makes for a striking display piece for any desktop.
